The joint solution brings clear benefits to ISPs: reduced bandwidth costs and deferred infrastructure investments together with a higher quality subscriber experience. The solution involves BitTorrent's intelligent client protocols (Policy Discovery Protocols) communicating with Oversi's NetEnhancer(TM) network intelligence platform to improve peer selection in line with the ISP's network capabilities while speeding up P2P downloads.

Danish Appeals Court: 'ISP Must Continue Blocking The Pirate Bay'

Upholds earlier decision requiring Tele 2 to block access to the BitTorrent tracker site over allegations that it contributes to copyright infringement by allowing customers to access the site. It was a while back that the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry(IFPI) won a case in a Danish court requiring ISP Tele 2 to prevent its internet subscribers from accessing Swedish BitTorrent tracker site The Pirate Bay. The IFPI accused Tele 2 of contributing to copyright infringement for merely allowing customers to access the site. A judgment delivered a few days by a Danish appeal court upholds that earlier decision requiring access to the Pirate Bay to be blocked. This effort by the IFPI t is the latest step forward in attempts by the entertainment industry to target ISPs in helping stop online P2P piracy.

BitTorrent tracker client now available for Mac users. uTorrent finally has a Mac version available and early reports are that it doesn't disappoint. If you recall, an early "alpha" build was leaked a little more than 2 months ago so this beta version was seen as imminent. For Mac users it's welcome news to have a more stable version though some will still prefer the Transmission BitTorrent client instead. Either way, hat tip to uTorrent for consistently meeting the needs of BitTorrent users.

Now The Pirate Bay is celebrating a new milestone--it's 5th anniversary (or so it thinks). Their not sure of the exact date, whether it happened "some weeks or months ago," but it happened sometime recently and they want to observe this important occasion. CRTC: 'Bell Canada Can Throttle BitTorrent - For Now'

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today announced that it has denied the Canadian Association of Internet Providers’ (CAIP) request that Bell Canada cease the traffic shaping practices it has adopted for its wholesale Gateway Access Service. However, in the future, Bell Canada will be required to notify its wholesale customers at least 30 days in advance of making any changes that impact its service. “Based on the evidence before us, we found that the measures employed by Bell Canada to manage its network were not discriminatory. Bell Canada applied the same traffic-shaping practices to wholesale customers as it did to its own retail customers,” said Konrad von Finckenstein, Q.

Landmark decision will determine if the telecommunications conglomerate can interfere with the Internet access it sells to wholesale customers. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the independent agency responsible for regulating Canada's broadcasting and telecommunications systems, is scheduled to finally rule on the twice delayed case of Bell Canada, a major Canadian telecommunications company and ISP, who's been accused of violating the country's Telecommunications Act by throttling the connection speeds of BitTorrent users after already selling the Internet access wholesale to third parties. These customers are represented by the Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP) whose main mission is to "foster the growth of a healthy and competitive Internet service industry in Canada." It was CAIP who lodged the complaint with the CRTC back on April 4th of this year. "In addition to the foregoing direct losses, Bell’s manipulation of GAS traffic is making it difficult if not impossible for independent ISPs to properly manage the services that they provide to their end-user customers," it reads.

Cyber Crimes Unit acts on evidence collected by the Bulgarian Association of Music Producers (BAMP). Authorities in Bulgaria have taken down Torrentvalley.com, an apparently major BitTorrent tracker site located in that country. The action was taken by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ministry of Interior’s serious and organized crime directorate, acting on evidence from the Bulgarian Association of Music Producers (BAMP), which represents the music industry in Bulgaria. Officers from the Cyber Crime Unit raided TorrentValley's servers a few days ago on November 11th and shut the site down.

Gary Fung, founder of the BitTorrent tracker site, shares his thoughts on copyright law and its need for reform in an age where the Internet allows society to freely share ideas and thoughts with one another It was about two months ago that Gary Fong, founder of the popular isoHunt BitTorrent tracker site, decided to go on the offensive by suing the Canadian Record Industry Association (CRIA) so that courts could clarify the site's legality once and for all. "We intend to take this all the way up to the Canadian Supreme Court unless CRIA settles with us out of court in any reasonable way," Fung noted. In his petition Fung pointed out that Google works just as isoHunt does, yet it indexes ACTUAL CONTENT! With isoHunt users can only search through .torrent (tracker) files whereas with Google you can search through music, movies, images, and more. In many cases you can even download many of them with a simple right-click of the mouse.

Navin announced his departure in an email to staff. His exit comes after several attempts to refocus the company, first as an entertainment network and then as a means for companies to distribute their products via BitTorrent DNA. In an attempt to develop a business around the BitTorrent protocol it was relaunched as a legitimate file-sharing service and formed a partnership with the MPAA.

Today, the latest edition of the Wikipedia school edition has been released by SOS Children’s Villages, a charity organization that aims to help orphans and vulnerable children worldwide. The 08/09 edition can be downloaded for free, via BitTorrent only, and comprises over 5500 hand-picked educational articles aimed at helping schools to enhance their curriculum.

This year’s Wikipedia edition for schools is the largest since the project started back in 2006. With 34,000 images and 20 million words, it is comparable to a twenty volume encyclopedia captured on a single DVD.

Without a doubt, it is the most successful “checked content” project based on the English Wikipedia, used by hundreds of schools in first and third world countries. The project was originally aimed at schools in developing countries, but because of the high quality articles - all based around the UK curriculum with an absence of adult content - it is often used on intranets in first world schools too.

To save on resources, Wikipedia for schools is only available online via BitTorrent, which practically reduces the charity’s distribution costs to zero. SOS Children CEO Andrew Cates, who is a Wikipedia administrator himself, said that they have no other choice than to use BitTorrent, since the 2.9 GB download would crush their server.

“BitTorrent was a bit disappointing in that it got us the only substantial criticisms we received online,” Cates said in an interview with Wikinews. “A lot of people find it too much effort to use. However for the period we offered a straight http: download we had huge problems with spiders eating vast bandwidth.”

“As per last year therefore our main two channels will be free download by BitTorrent and mailing the DVDs free all over the world. At a pinch we will (as before) put straight copies up for individuals who cannot get it any other way, and we have some copies on memory sticks for on distributors,” Cates added.

The .torrent file is available for download on the SOS Children’s Villages website. For those who don’t want to install a BitTorrent client, the DVD can also be downloaded from any web browser with BitLet.

A final word of advice from SOS Children’s Villages: “It helps our charity if you keep µTorrent running after your download is finished.”
