It seems that one political party in New Zealand has some bold plans for the future of New Zealand's technology sector. There's an interesting report over on Stuff which suggests that one of the political parties of New Zealand, namely the Green Party, is pushing for bold plans for New Zealand's technological future. The policy as released by MP Metiria Turei says that, among other things, it would exclude software from the patent process and investigate the possibility of a free municipally owned wireless network. The report suggests that this move follows up an earlier move to get government desktop computers moved over from Microsoft's Windows to open sourced solution Linux. From the report: Centre systems manager Jason Horncy says it is "very satisfied" with its decision in 2003 to install Linux on the 120 desktop PCs in its 25 regional offices and on most PCs in its head office.

Reports are surfacing that Italian media company Mediaset has filed a lawsuit for half a billion euros against the content streaming website. The Associated Press is reporting that multimedia giant from Italy 'Mediaset' is suing YouTube. Add that to a long list of international content outlets trying to find a get rich quick scheme. From the AP: Mediaset, the media empire founded by Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, said Wednesday it was seeking at least 500 million euros ($779 million) in damages against Google Inc.

ACTRA Member Dismayed Over ACTRA Stance on Copyright Reform

There is no shortage of coverage on Canada's new copyright reform. While ACTRA called Canada's DMCA a 'good first step', a member seems to be dismayed by the stance, let alone the copyright reform bill. When Copyright reform hit Canada and it was discovered to be serving only a few multinational interests, CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association), an organization long seen as merely an arm of the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) in Canada after major Canadian record labels left them over CRIA's views on the previous copyright reform legislation was quick to applaud the latest copyright reform by the current Conservative government. One of the groups that CRIA showed off was a group known as ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) who, in a press release, said that C-61 was 'a good first step'. It's an interesting stance considering back in January were reports about strikes over being paid - namely in new media or online revenues.

A little over a month ago I reported how Charter Communications planned to begin tracking customer internet traffic for resale to a targeted advertising firm. The plan, which was set to begin testing was early as next month in four markets before going systemwide, immediately drew condemnation from customers, privacy advocates, and congressmen from the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet. Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), chairman, and Joe Barton (R-TX) wrote to Neil Smit, Charter's president and chief executive officer, soon after the plan was announced, asking him to put it on hold until the three could discuss the matter.

If, however, one asks a German privacy advocate about ISPs illegally breaching privacy, there's a good chance that the case front and center of their attention has nothing to do with China, the United States, DPI in Canada, or Phorm in Britain. DW-World, a German news site that reports news in English, has been following a very interesting case in Germany since the 24th of this month. According to the reports, the story started with Deutsche Telekom, a German telecommunications company, being suspected of breaching privacy by wiretapping reporters whenever they communicated with the companies directors. The German media apparently have been following leaks that suggest that wiretap orders were ordered by senior executives.
